The contemporary art world boasts some pretty amazing talent and John Varriano, American Artist definitely counts among them. If you haven’t had the opportunity to view his work we strongly suggest you take some time to peruse his website www.johnvarriano-americanartist.com. It’s worth a peak, and don’t be surprised if you find yourself captivated and transported. Varriano’s body of work is impressive, ranging from figurative to abstract paintings and a new collection he calls megaliths is awe inspiring.
Unlike many of today’s abstract artists, Varriano knows how to paint. He handles the brush with a combination of delicate strokes, and bold declarations. His level of creativity is astounding. Shapes, forms, figures and ideas seem to dance around in his mind, producing an endless body of visual delights.
WARRIOR
Is one of a series of paintings John Varriano has produced that centers around the Archangels of the Armageddon. If these are the beings that will come to our rescue in the end of days, there is hope for the human race after all. The other-worldly power of this magnificent painting is expressed through an extraordinary use of color and shape. Varriano exhibits an uncanny ability to give us a work that is at once powerful in motion, yet balanced and calm. This is abstraction rooted in the classical ideal, and well worth a look.

RED SQUARE
Red Square is also part of a series of paintings by John Varriano that can be broadly characterized as Constructivist Paintings. It is a geometrical representation of balance and is indicative of Varriano’s unique talent for combining the science of mechanics and the philosophy of aesthetics.
In this series of paintings the artist has done an impressive job of substituting color for gravity. Varriano invites us to a transcendental experience where art and science perfectly align.

CARTHARSIS
This exceptional painting is an explosion of artistic force. In viewing this work, we get the sense that Varriano attacked the canvas, applying paint with a mixture of brushes and what can only be termed, unconventional artist’s tools. It’s a fairly large work, and we can imagine it required intense physical and mental endurance to complete.
The painting represents Abstract Expressionism at its finest. While a superficial glance may tempt one to think the painting was created with reckless abandon, a closer study reveals a keenly measured mingling of skill, instinct and artistic prowess. In Catharsis, John Varriano gives us Abstract Expressionism at its finest.

ARTIST & MODEL
This painting is a brilliant example of Varriano’s “Crystalism,” a new form of abstract art created by the artist. Of special note, is the paintings penetrating psychological expose into the interaction between artist and model.
In viewing this piece one can’t help feeling the connection between the two. It is not so much a result of their facial expressions or the physical interaction of their bodies; rather we experience an intense interaction of forms and space. One the great mysteries of the visual arts is that psychology can be penetrated abstractly by the manipulation of form in space in lieu of words.
In closing, these highlights barely scratch the surface of Varriano’s brilliant body of work. As I shared in the opening, and expound upon in my next article, Varriano is not only a master at abstract painting, but a master of figurative portraiture as well.
